Description
This museum is in honor of Mother Jones and the labor movement in the coal industry. Mary Harris "Mother" Jones was born in 1830 in Cork County, Ireland and becama a fierce advocate for the rights of miners and children. In 1902, Mother Jones was named the "most dangerous woman in America" for her succcess in organizing mine workers and their families against the mine companies. She also protested the lax enforcement of child labor laws. Before her death at age 100, Mother Jones requested to be buried with "her boys", the coal miners she championed for decades. Mother Jones' final resting place is the Union Miners Cemetery in Mt. Olive.
