Description
The Loomis House, the most significant building on the Square, was built by Judge Thaddeus Loomis, one of four commissioners in charge of building the Macoupin County "Million Dollar Courthouse" and involved in its scanal. Completed in 1870, the Loomis House was opened as a grand hotel with fifty rooms on three floors and a large dining area. Eight years after it opened, Judge Loomis sold the building due to financial problems and the name was changed to the St. George Hotel. Today the top three floors are closed to the public but the ground level is a showcase of 19th century architecture and home to a variety of businesses.
