Description
The Coal Museum's purppose is to collect and preserve the role of coal mining in Illinois. The building is filled with coal mining memorabilia from large equipment to coal scrip (form of payment for the miners' work that could only be spent at the Company Store). Displays include mine stikes, disasters, rescue and safety teams, child labor and mine subsidence. The history of union activity in our county which had national and even worldwide impact is proudly chronicled.
